How much does custom plastic injection molding cost?

There are two costs: a one-time tooling cost for the mold, and a per-unit price for each part. Tooling cost depends on part size, complexity, the number of cavities and the steel used. Most of the finished products we make and deliver land between under $1 and $50 per unit, delivered in the USA, with the unit price falling as quantity goes up. What is custom injection molding?

Injection molding is a process where melted plastic is injected into a custom steel mold, cooled and ejected as a finished part. It is the most cost-effective way to make plastic parts in volume, with consistent quality from the first part to the last. Related processes include overmolding, insert molding and silicone molding. How long does it take to make a mold and start production?

Production tooling typically takes 30 to 40 days, followed by first samples from the new mold and any adjustments. Mass production then takes 45 to 60 days, and ocean shipping 35 to 45 days. For a brand-new product, plan on 5 to 7 months from idea to delivered inventory, including design and engineering.

What is the minimum order quantity for molded plastic parts?

Because the mold is a fixed cost, the first order needs to be large enough to make the tooling worth the investment. The right number depends on your part, your unit price target and how fast you sell. We help you balance tooling cost against order size before you commit. Read more about how MOQs work.

Which plastics and materials can you mold?

Common choices include PP, ABS, PC, PE, nylon, TPE and TPR, plus silicone. We also overmold soft materials onto hard parts, like a rubber grip on a plastic handle, which is a specialty of ours. We recommend a material based on strength, flexibility, finish, food-contact needs and cost.

Can you help design my part so it can be molded?
